A charming beach district known for its boutique villas, excellent surf breaks from May to October, and a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere that appeals to families and discerning travellers alike.
Kata is one of Phuket's most photogenic beach areas, divided into Kata Yai (Big Kata) and Kata Noi (Little Kata). The main Kata Beach stretches for 1.5 kilometres of fine white sand, bookended by rocky headlands that create a sheltered bay with calm waters during high season (November-April) and exciting surf breaks during the southwest monsoon (May-October).
Kata Yai is the busier of the two beaches, lined with sun loungers, beachfront restaurants and massage pavilions. Kata Noi, accessible via a short drive south, is consistently rated among Thailand's most beautiful beaches — smaller, less crowded, and framed by the iconic Katathani Resort. The Kata viewpoint (Karon Viewpoint) on the hill between Kata and Nai Harn offers one of the island's most photographed panoramas of three bays.
Kata is Phuket's unofficial surf capital. The Kata Beach Surf School and local board rental shops operate year-round, with the best waves arriving between June and September. The annual Phuket Surfing Contest is held here. Beyond surfing, the area offers stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkelling around Pu Island (a short swim offshore), and diving trips to nearby Shark Point and the King Cruiser wreck.
The restaurant scene in Kata punches above its weight. Highlights include The Boathouse Wine & Grill (one of Phuket's finest restaurants), Kata Mama Thai Kitchen for authentic southern Thai cuisine, and numerous Italian and seafood restaurants along Kata Road. The Dino Park Mini Golf is a family favourite, and the area hosts a lively walking street market on Saturdays.
Kata offers a balanced mix of condominiums, boutique pool villas, and hillside residences. Entry-level condos start from 2.5 million THB, while sea-view villas on the hillside command 12-35 million THB. Kata Noi is noticeably more exclusive, with limited supply and prices starting at 8 million THB for a one-bedroom sea-view condo. Rental yields average 6-8% per annum, benefiting from both high-season holiday lets and a growing segment of long-term tenants drawn by the area's family-friendly reputation. Notable developments include Kata Gardens, Kata Ocean View, and The Shore at Katathani.
Kata is 45 km from Phuket Airport (about 60-75 minutes). The area has a Tesco Lotus Express, several 7-Elevens, ATMs, and a well-regarded medical clinic. International schools such as QSI Phuket and Kajonkiet International are a 20-minute drive away. The road between Kata and Karon has been recently widened, improving traffic flow during peak season.
