West vs east

All the swimming beaches are on the west coast. The east (Chalong, Rawai pier) is marinas and jetties where island boats depart; it’s not for beach time. If you’re here for the sea, pick the west.

Areas by type of trip

Patong

Nightlife & centre

The island’s main buzz: nightlife, bars, shopping, restaurants for any budget. Loud and crowded. Good for a first trip and active holidays.

Karon & Kata

Beaches & families

Long, beautiful beaches next to Patong but calmer. A good balance of infrastructure and sea. Popular with families and couples.

Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao

Premium west

The quiet, upscale west coast. Bang Tao (Laguna, Boat Avenue) has trendy beach clubs and dining. For comfortable, higher-end stays.

Nai Harn & Rawai

South, laid-back

The southern tip: calmer, lots of expats, local colour, yachts and seafood. Great for long winters and those who want to live, not party.

Old Town

Culture & cafes

Sino-Portuguese architecture, coffee shops, street art, markets. Not on the beach, but the most authentic Phuket. For atmosphere and remote work.

Mai Khao & Nai Yang

North, quiet

The north by the airport: long empty beaches, nature, silence. Less infrastructure. For seclusion and calm.

FAQ

Where is best to stay in Phuket for a first trip?

For a first visit, Patong (everything nearby, lively) or Karon/Kata (beaches, calmer) are easiest. From there it’s simple to reach the island’s main spots.

Patong or Karon — which to choose?

Patong is for nightlife, partying and shopping. Karon has the same beaches but quieter — better for families and couples. They’re 10–15 minutes apart.

Which coast of Phuket is best for beaches?

The west coast (Patong, Karon, Kata, Surin, Bang Tao) has the swimming beaches. The east coast is piers and marinas, not for swimming — that’s where island trips depart.

Where to stay in Phuket long-term?

Nai Harn, Rawai and Old Town are popular for long stays: calmer, more everyday amenities and expat community, cheaper monthly.
